Our National Endowment for the Humanities Learning Library program, "Sonoran Heritage," for which I was the creative consultant and project writer, received the prestigious annual Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History for our "creative and far-reaching multicultural education program in local history."
Arizona Historical Society:
Land of Lava, Ash and Sand: The Pinacate Region of Northwestern Mexico, essays by Ronald L. Ives, compiled by James W. Byrkit, and edited by Karen Dahood, was a unanimous selection for the 1989 list of outstanding Southwestern books (The Arizona Daily Star, December 17, 1989).
The University of Arizona Extended University:
We received a grant award of $35,450 from the Richard A. Harvill Memorial Endowment to sponsor a conference titled, "Invisible Scholars: Returning Students at American Universities." The purpose was to call attention to the educational needs of working adults, who were the market for our new Evening & Weekend University.
